French Masterpieces from Realism to Impressionism
Eugène Delacroix George Sand 1838 Inv nr 280 WH Fotograf Anders Sune Berg

At Museum Ordrupgaard, one can admire a string of masterpieces by French masters such as Berthe Morisot, Claude MonetGustave Courbet, Edgar Degas and Paul Gauguin.

Twelve paintings by all the great French impressionists.

This was the ambitious vision underpinning what would become the most significant collection of impressionist works outside France. In the few years between 1916 and 1918, with that aim in mind, the founders of Museum Ordrupgaard, Henny and Wilhelm Hansen, built up a treasure trove of French works spanning the entire 19th century.

The collection starts with the Romantic period, continues through early realism and the Barbizon School to arrive finally at impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces. Here you will find works by artists such as Morisot, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Gauguin and Matisse in the 2021 Snøhetta building, which, like a jewellery box, houses this unique collection of both oil paintings and rare pastel works.
